New Feist Album Details

February 8, 2007 at 12:49 am | In Music, News, mp3 | No Comments

According to Pitchfork, Feist has announced some details on her follow-up album to 2005’s Let it Die (BUY). The album will be titled The Remainder and will hit shelves and be in my hands on May 1st. It’s getting released to rest of the world on April 23, but we unfortunate collection of people who call North America our home will have to wait over a week after that to get our hands on it. Not fair, if you ask me.

Damn, she’s attractive. And that voice… just wow.
You should already have the Mp3 I’m including here, but if you don’t, you’re welcome. It’s off Broken Social Scene’s B-Sides album Bee Hives (BUY), and it’s Leslie Feist’s rendition of the BSS song “Lover’s Spit”. Too awesome for words, so I’ll let the song speak for itself.

YACHT, and I don’t mean the boat

MP3: YACHT - Music by Friends for the Radio in France

YACHT

Alright, first off, before you read a word of this (which I guess you already have) click on the link above this text and start listening. Believe me, it will just be more beneficial if you are hearing while you’re reading.

Sadly, I heard about the blow only recently last year when their song “True Affection” was featured as iTunes’ free download of the week. I know, I know, that’s a pretty lame way to find out about a band, it would be a lot cooler if I had said I’ve known about them since Khaela Maricich’s days as a ukulele player for her old band Get the Hell Out of the Way of the Volcano. But, that isn’t to say I like them any less then you old school listeners.

So, what does this talk about The Blow have to do with this post??? Well, the other member, Jona Bechtolt (thats the guy) has his own band called YACHT and has just released a track for airplay in Europe.

Here you are about a minute or two (depending on how fast you read) into the song and you’re thinking, ‘ok, yeah, this is a little odd, but like the rest of The Blow’s catalog it’s super catchy and saturated with synth blips and beeps’. Well, my friend keep listening, your in for a change.

See, from reading a post on their MySpace page, I understand that this is an hour long segment Jona created for their label to play in France. The label, Tomlab is based in Germany and urges bands to try and play something in a different manner than they might normally do. So I’m sure you are starting to notice this is a strange song(?) album(?) dance mix(?) collection of dance mixes(?).

The track goes from sampling his band’s own songs (The Blow – Babay) to a whole slew of others, most of which are already remixes in their own fashion. My favorite is the mash-up of Notorious B.I.G.’s Juicy with Elton John’s Tiny Dancer (46:40 minutes into the song). If there was any song that would most definitely be on my Memory Lane it would be Juicy, (a little nod to Chris’ last post). You can find the complete track list here.

See now to me this is more what taking drugs is like. Most people claim it’s more like a Grateful Dead album or an Animal Collective type song, something real droney and euphoric, but to me it would be more like this song. A roller-coaster. At some points hectic and maniacal and then at others placid and calm but extremely strange through and a sense of “What?! Is this really happening” throughout. Well anyway that’s my story and I’m sticking to it, sorry if this write-up didn’t take you through the whole song… I still suggest listening to the rest of it, maybe play a game of snood or something.

Memory Lane - Vol. 2: Hip-Hop Edition

February 5, 2007 at 7:25 pm | In Memory Lane, mp3, nostalgia | No Comments

I know the title doesn’t exactly sit well with me either, but hear me out and give this post a chance.

Do you remember what you were like in 1997? When I look at the actual year itself, it doesn’t seem like that long ago. It takes an additional second for it to sink in that I was 9 around this time that year (10 post-4/15). My musical tastes had not yet been shaped into what they are today. Take for example how excited I was to purchase the new Puff Daddy and the Family CD No Way Out (do NOT buy). Of course, I had to get the clean version, then after hearing the clean version my mother had wished she hadn’t let me get the album at all and confiscated it. However, I did later stumble upon a copy of the album on cassette in my older brother’s room. This time it was not the clean version (SCORE!).

Of course that’s just one example from my musically misguided youth. I was also into a whole bunch of other hip-hop-esque crap. I’ve included three of the songs from that period in my life that still stick out, and serve as a nostalgic guilty pleasure from time to time (especially when I’ve had a bit to drink). Although all three of these songs came out before I was even forming any significant memories (1993-94), they often set the scene in the latter half of the 90s at the local roller rink (The Roller Palace) as me or one of my friends would request that the middle-school-aged DJ play them, mainly just so we could revel in the uncomfortable look on our parents faces as they watched from the sidelines as our innocent little brains were corrupted while we chugged along in counter-clockwise formation.

Mp3: Snow - Informer | (Buy - 12 Inches of Snow)
Really, the only reason I liked this song was because I thought he said “I’ll lick your bum-bum now” during the chorus, and that made me laugh. I still have no idea what he’s saying for a majority of the song. How ridiculous is that album title?

Mp3: Sagat - Funk Dat | (Buy - Funk Dat [Single])
This song for some strange reason still cracks me up to this day. The song structure was unprecedented and yet to be duplicated. Starting each verse with the line “Question: Why is it…”. Pure genius, and definitely could have only come out of the early 90s.

Mp3: Warren G (Feat. Nate Dogg) - Regulate | (Buy - Regulate…G Funk Era)
I have actually grown to appreciate this song more with time. I don’t mean that sarcastically. I used to love this song when I was younger and after having rediscovered it only about two years and now actually understanding what the lyrics mean, I actually like it more. I don’t care what that makes you think of me. Blast this song and see if your head doesn’t start bobbing to the beat when Nate Dogg takes the mic. Go ahead, I dare you.

Cassino Updates (Finally)

February 1, 2007 at 10:50 pm | In Music, Music I Love, mp3 | No Comments

This will be a bit of a short post because I’ve got a whole lot of homework to get to that I’ve been putting off all day. I just read on Cassino’s website that the tracking and mixing for their upcoming debut album is all finished. Now this may not seem like big news to most of you, but for those who have been following the band this is the first news we have received on the album’s progress since November when they announced that the recording process was finished. They are still yet to give a release date, but according to their November post the album is tentatively titled Sounds of Salvation.

Personally, I’m just glad to hear that things are still happening for them, I was afraid they sink into obscurity before even getting the chance to show the world what they are made of. From what I understand, the album is going to be self-released. With that being the case it seems that the initial market they are playing to will be fans of Nick Torres’s old band Northstar (myself included, and if you’re not familiar with them go buy their records here). However, I’m sure that a significant buzz will follow the release of the album. They are fantastic live, and if the four recorded songs of theirs that I have heard so far are any indication of the strength of their debut album, it could potentially be one of the best that comes out this year. (And yes, that’s including all those bands whose upcoming albums have been hyped beyond belief. I’m looking at YOU, Arcade Fire.)

Music to the North, Film to the South

January 30, 2007 at 7:16 pm | In Film, Music, mp3 | No Comments

Canada + Mexico culture

North America is so hot right now. Some people feel as though they have to look to Europe or Asia to provide the cultural essence that creates “indie” forms of art. The form of art that is not totally focused on subject but instead on abstract. Painting a picture from the cubist eye, creating a film of a fairy tale among the bloodshed of a dictatorship or even creating an album without a single guitar. Oh wait! Those are all characteristics of North American forms of art. After recently hearing about the documentary “Lives for Sale” a film about the human trafficking of Latino and Mexican immigrants across US state borders, I realized Mexican cinema is all over the indie scene right now. And with all the hype around the Arcade Fire’s next album it seems as though Canada is gaining more and more indie cred on the music side of things. So as I had said earlier, North America is so hot right now (above and below the US).

Ok, lets start with Mexico. This country has gained one of the worst reputations for illegal immigrants this side of Bosnia. This is most likely to do with the not-caring-whether-they-get-caught attitude that many illegal immigrants have in crossing that border between their country and the United States. For a more in-depth analysis of this problem as told in a documentary by Gayla Jamison. Check your local listings here (http://www.livesforsale.com/stations.pdf) to see the film.

Three other films released last year by Mexican Directors are up for Academy awards; Babel, Children of Men and Pan’s Labyrinth. I did not get the chance to see Babel but the other two films were some of my favorites of 2006 and would highly recommend them to anyone that enjoys a fantastic storyline as well as great cinematography.

Now as for our neighbor to the north, the 49th parallel seems to divide not only the US and Canada but also music from extremely inventive and experimental soundscapes. By now we’ve all heard the endless hype over the Arcade Fire’s next album and how it’s supposed to be the most mind-blowing experience since Dark Side Of the Moon but lets not forget what other bands have been experimenting in their own labs of reverberations.

This country seems to be synonymous with indie rock and as well they should be. Broken Social Scene is the band that always comes to mind when talking about Canada, but there’s also Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Weakerthans (the band whose song this site was named after), Malajube, The New Pornographers, God Speed! You Black Emperor, Metric, The Dears, Tokyo Police Club… the list could go on forever, the Arts and Crafts family alone could have over 10 bands.

Not to put a damper on America or anything but culturally I just feel like we’re lacking. We’re currently at war with a country that is on the opposite side of the world. We’re living in a society that discriminates against anything you cannot put a price tag on. We’re not living in a very creative and artistically conducive nation. But then again there is hope, when you’re at the bottom there’s only one way to go, and that’s up. Out of the ashes of the dark ages in Europe came the Renaissance, one of the largest cultural movements of mankind, so lets hope for the same in the United States.

It’s a .Com Celebration!

January 30, 2007 at 12:06 am | In Music, mp3 | No Comments

Woohoo! I’m excited to announce that Alex and I have just dropped the “wordpress” domain from our URL and now we are officially aShinyNewMachine.com. We’re hoping to get more serious with this blog, and we’re thinking this was a good first step. Expect some changes to follow in the coming weeks/months, including a new site layout/design to come sometime in the near future.

In celebration of this occasion, we’re hooking you up with some great tunes. A few of these are pretty rare, and all worth a listen. As always, thanks for stopping by. We’d love to hear from our readers - let us know how we are doing, how we could improve, etc. Any feedback is welcomed.

Mp3: Sufjan Stevens vs. Kanye West - Zombies Walk!!
Kanye’s “Jesus Walks” is mixed with the Sufjan song “They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!!…” to a surprisingly enjoyable result.

Mp3: Ted Leo - Since U Been Gone / Maps (Kelly Clarkson / Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover)
No one can deny that Ted Leo is the absolute man. He turns Kelly Clarkson’s garbage into something worth listening to, and somehow throws in part of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs song “Maps” and makes it all sound cohesive. Only Ted Leo could pull this off.

Mp3: John K. Samson (Weakerthans) - Slips and Tangles
This is a very early version of the Weakerthans song from Left & Leaving. John K. recorded it as the title track for his solo album. The whole album is great, it’s very hard to find, but if you can get your hands on it you’ll be in lo-fi heaven.

Mp3: Feist - Mushaboom (Postal Service Mix) | (Buy - Open Season)
Ben Gibbard’s voice works so well in this song you’d think it was originally meant to be a duet.

Mp3: Eddie Vedder - You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away (Beatles Cover) | (Buy - I am Sam soundtrack)
I don’t care how you feel about Pearl Jam, but this version of the Beatles classic is awesome.

Mp3: Apollo Sunshine - Strange Things
This is a rare unreleased track from one of my favorite bands.

Annuals and Foxy Shazam!

January 29, 2007 at 9:31 am | In Music, experimental, mp3 | No Comments

Foxy Shazam going nutso

The band whose live performance changed my life forever and is the bar for which all other shows I see are rated; cue Foxy Shazam!. I still can’t believe these guys aren’t getting more hype. I saw them back in April of 2006 open for Cassino who was opening for As Tall As Lions. I was reminded of how great this band was the other day when I picked up a new album by a band called Annuals. After listening to some of the songs posted below I know you’ll probably be thinking ‘these guys don’t sound that similar’, well just bear with me. Annuals may not have the metal of Foxy or the slap you in the face spasms but they do have the intricately woven and complex scene changes from one part of a song to the next.

MP3: Foxy Shazam! – Brains of Vegas (buy)

MP3: Foxy Shazam! – NO. don’t Shoot

After listening to these songs, if you still think I’m being over the top about these guys, read a recent interview with them here and check out some absurd pictures here. Literally when I saw Foxy down in Connecticut the lead singer, Eric Nally did not face the audience and the keyboardist, Sky White started doing pushups on his instrument. It feels like no one else is pushing the envelope this much in their shows, and although I did not see them when they were here in Boston recently, Annuals might be the closest contenders.

Now I know I’m a little late jumping on the Annuals bandwagon but man these guys are good. I would classify them somewhere around experimental alternative if that makes any sense at all. They use a healthy amount of synthesizer inflections along with exotic percussive gestures and just the right amount of secondary gang vocals that often erupt into screaming. It is not often that such innovative sounding music is combined with such great lyrics that are sung with a high level of energy.

Unfortunately for myself, as said earlier, the band was just in the greater Boston area. I did not make the show and was supremely bummed out to hear what a great show it was. Just from listening to the bands recorded material I can tell that they would be a great act to see take the stage.

Apollo Sunshine - New Material!!

January 29, 2007 at 12:52 am | In Boston, Concert Reviews, Music, Music I Love, Video | 2 Comments

For those of you who actually read this blog, (as opposed to just stopping by via elbo.ws to get some mp3s [you know who you are]) you know how I feel about Apollo Sunshine. So I’ll refrain from my normal gushing and just direct you to my previous posts about this amazing band here and here and here.

I just got back from seeing Apollo for the sixteenth time, if I’m counting correctly. They played at the Abbey Lounge on Beacon Street in Somerville. It was a free show, and not many people were there considering it was sort of a last minute thing with minimal promotion. They only played for about 30-45 minutes or so, and showcased a bunch of new material. Also, they threw in an amazing version of the song “Lord” from their self-titled album (BUY). I swear they make that song a little better everytime I see them. The new stuff sounds really good too, so I’m super excited to hear some more, although they haven’t really said yet when they plan to get recording again. I took a video tonight of them performing one of their new songs. They didn’t mention what the song was called, but I dug it pretty hard, so now I am giving it to you to dig just as hard. Enjoy.

The Televangelist And The Architect @ Middle East Upstairs

January 25, 2007 at 12:58 am | In Boston, Concert Reviews, Music, Video, mp3 | No Comments

I just got back from seeing The Televangelist and the Architect at the Middle East. They only played a thirty minute set, but it was very enjoyable. I just picked up both of their albums - The Mass Exodus From California & Diaries Of The Intelligentsia. Both are really solid records, and I recommend picking them up.

I’d say my only bone to pick with this show is that the The Televangelist and the Architect’s music is really not meant to played in such a small venue to such a small amount people (probably less than 50). When I listen to their recorded music I can just picture it in my head filling large rooms like the Avalon, to a sold out crowd with a some epic lighting going on in the background. So TTATA, do me a favor and start getting big. And readers, do me a favor and listen to this band, and tell all your friends. Soon the buzz will be huge and you will be able to catch this great band at all your favorite middle-range venues across the country and beyond! Until then, I hope these videos and pictures will hold you over. Also, I threw a couple mp3s in the mix as well, because you’ve had a long week, and you deserve it. Enjoy.

State of the Union & Ted Leo

January 24, 2007 at 6:57 pm | In Music, Politics, Video, mp3 | 1 Comment

So the president gave his sixth State of the Union address last night. He said basically what was expected of him. He was clearltry ying to move more toward the middle on a lot of issues and definitely played to left by bringing up issues concerning the environment, health care, etc. For a second there I really thought the words “global warming” were going to come out of his mouth; but no, we got some sort of awkward compromise that spewed in the form of “Global Climate Change”. Oh well, at least he’s acknowledging the problem, unlike many on the right, including the evil man lurking over the president’s right shoulder the whole night. Did anyone else catch that shit-eating grin Dick Cheney had on his face after Bush mentioned he wanted to modernize fuel efficiency standards in cars? Good lord that guy gives me the creeps. Could the VP be anymore like Mr. Potter from It’s a Wonderful Life? You be the judge:

Moving on - although the president didn’t get to the subject until about twenty minutes into the speech, the big issue on everyone’s mind was the war in Iraq, and the troop escalation. He did not say much more than was already known, and I don’t think he changed the opinions of anyone in the room that night. Although a majority of those in congress, and Americans in general disagree with the choice, the president has shown that he will not change his position on this subject. But even with all this opposition and national polarization, apparently the nation is still “strong.” Not the first time G.W.B. has made this claim, check out the daily show clip below which revisits some classic Bush SOTU moments.

I think we’re all just fed up with this stuff, and personally I’m looking forward to 2008. If a Democrat doesn’t take the presidency I’ve lost all hope in our democracy, let alone the version of democracy we’re trying to export to countries that just don’t want us there in the first place. Not that I’m a huge fan of Democrats either, I just subscribe to the “anyone but Bush” point of view. I’ve included the Ted Leo song “The One Who Got Us Out” at the bottom of this post. I did this because I read somewhere that the song was written for John Kerry during the 2004 campaigns as a bit of a call to action for the Democrat to get us out of Iraq should he have been elected, even though we know he wasn’t exactly against the war. Unfortunately, we weren’t so lucky that year; but I’m hoping whoever takes the throne in 2008 (Clinton? Obama?? KUCINICH?!!) will “turn into the one who got us out.”

Back to music. I love Ted Leo, and I cannot wait for his new album Living With The Living to drop on March 20. Also he’ll be coming to Boston and playing at the Avalon on May 4, which will be my first Ted Leo concert experience. I’ve included three mp3s here - “The One Who Got Us Out” off of Shake The Sheets for the above-mentioned reason, “The Sword in the Stone” off of the Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead single/ep/whatever because even at only 1:55 in length it’s probably my favorite of his songs, and finally “The Sons of Cain” is the first track that’s been released off of Living With The Living and if it’s a good representation of the rest of the album, March 20th is going to be a very good day.

P.S. - VOTE KUCINICH!

MP3: Ted Leo - The One Who Got Us Out | (Buy - Shake the Sheets)

MP3: Ted Leo - The Sword in the Stone | (Buy - Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead)

MP3: Ted Leo - The Sons of Cain | (Pre-order - Living with the Living - Available March 20 from Touch and Go Records)
